Getting around Morocco: Al Boraq, classic trains, CTM coaches, taxis — and the 2029 high-speed line

Morocco’s six host cities are spread over 900 km, from Tangier to Agadir. The train covers the Atlantic corridor well (Tangier – Rabat – Casablanca – Marrakech) plus Fez; Agadir has no station. Prices are in dirhams (MAD): €1 ≈ MAD 10.7 on 30 August 2026.

Al Boraq, Morocco’s high-speed train

Tangier – Kenitra – Rabat – Casablanca, 323 km, up to 320 km/h. Tangier → Casablanca in 2h10, Tangier → Rabat-Agdal in about 1h20, Rabat → Casablanca in about 50 minutes.

• Tangier – Casablanca: MAD 99–224 in 2nd class (≈ €9–21), MAD 129–292 in 1st (≈ €12–27), according to Seat61 (timetables valid until 12 December 2026). The official 2026 ONCF fares could not be verified online: check on oncf-voyages.ma.
• Tangier – Marrakech (Al Boraq plus a connection): MAD 186–338 in 2nd class, MAD 249–472 in 1st.

Classic trains (Al Atlas)

• Casablanca – Marrakech: 2h30 to 2h40, 8 to 10 direct trains a day from 06:00 to 20:00, MAD 90–130 in 2nd class, MAD 150–190 in 1st (secondary source, May 2026).
• Casablanca – Fez and Marrakech – Fez: 2026 fares unverified; the usual range on classic trains is MAD 25–200.

Intercity coaches and taxis

• CTM and Supratours: a national network with comfortable coaches, MAD 70–120 for a typical intercity trip. Essential for Agadir (about 3h30 to 4h from Marrakech) and handy for Fez.
• Grands taxis (shared Mercedes cars or minivans, 6 passengers): MAD 25–70 per person depending on distance, leaving when the taxi is full.
• Plane: Casablanca – Agadir with Royal Air Maroc, from €124.44 return, observed on 30 August 2026.

Within the cities

• Petits taxis (a different colour in each city): flag-fall around MAD 2.50, a short trip around MAD 10, +50% after 20:00. Insist on the meter, or agree the price before you get in.
• Casablanca: tram (4 lines) and busway, MAD 9 for a paper ticket, MAD 7 with the card, MAD 50 for 24 hours.
• Rabat-Salé: tram lines 1 and 2, flat fare MAD 7 (MAD 10 for tram plus bus).
• Agadir: the “Amalway” trambus since April–May 2026, MAD 5 per journey, every 5 minutes from 06:00 to 22:00.
• Marrakech, Fez and Tangier: Alsa buses (fares unverified, around MAD 4 in Marrakech) and petits taxis.

Getting to the stadiums

All the Moroccan stadiums are on the outskirts, with no metro. Budget for a taxi: Tangier MAD 70–100 (30 min), Marrakech MAD 80–120 (25 min), Fez MAD 60–100 (25 min), Agadir MAD 50–80 from the seafront (15 min), Rabat MAD 30–50 (15 min, or the tram to Madinat Al Irfane then a taxi). Benslimane (Grand Stade Hassan II): road access only for now, with a high-speed station planned for 2030.

What changes by 2030

• Kenitra – Marrakech high-speed line: opening targeted for November 2029. Casablanca – Marrakech in about 1h10, Tangier – Marrakech in 2h40 to 2h45, with stations at Benslimane and Hay Ryad (Rabat).
• New terminal at Mohammed V airport (Casablanca): delivery 2029, with an underground railway station.
• Urban transport: an MAD 11 billion plan for 2025–2029 (Casablanca 4 tram lines + 2 bus rapid transit lines, Rabat-Salé 2 tram lines, studies in Marrakech, Tangier and Fez).
