San Sebastián

Anoeta expanded to 42,247 seats, a city of 190,000 with limited hotel capacity, and a council that is still hesitating.

San Sebastián (Donostia) is the smallest European host city by municipal population. Its Anoeta stadium is being worked on to reach the FIFA minimum of 40,000 seats. The council has voiced doubts (cost, traffic, tourist pressure) and has been part of a joint bid with Bilbao since June 2026.

Getting there

Train from Madrid: 5 h 23 min minimum (no high-speed line), around 6 departures a day. From France: Hendaye is 20 km away (the Euskotren “Topo” runs into the centre), Biarritz 50 km. San Sebastián airport is at Hondarribia (flights to Madrid and Barcelona), Bilbao is 100 km away.

Getting around

Dbus buses: €1.95 in cash, €0.59 with a Mugi card (up to 20 journeys a month). Anoeta is about 2 km from the centre, reachable by bus or Euskotren train.

Don’t miss

  • La Concha beach — One of the finest city beaches in Europe.
  • Monte Igueldo — A historic funicular and a view over the bay (monteigueldo.es).
  • Parte Vieja and pintxos — The old town, world capital of the pintxo.
